5 Most Common Traffic Violations

A traffic violation occurs when a vehicle driver deliberately or unintentionally breaks a traffic law set by the authorities. There are basically two types of traffic violations: a moving violation and a non-moving violation. Moving violations include exceeding the speed limit, drunk driving, driving without lights, careless or reckless driving, not stopping on a stop sign or not obeying other traffic signs and signals.

A non-moving violation, on the other hand, takes place when the driver has parked the car in a no-parking area or in a fire lane. Some other violations, such as not wearing a seat belt, are considered moving infractions in some states, while in others they are termed as non-moving violations.

Some of these infractions are considered minor and may be classified as violations of the civil law. These include child restraint violation, defective equipment, no valid license on person, and some other non-moving violations. Most moving violations result in points against your license which consequently increase the insurance rate and may result in canceling of your license.

In this article we will explore 5 of the most common traffic violations all over the world.

1. Speeding: This is one of the moving traffic violations. There are some areas where restricting the speed is absolutely required. Even in other less restrictive areas you may get a traffic ticket if you are exceeding the specified speed limit. Two to four points are given if a driver is driving 1-50 mph over the speed limit. In addition to this, there is also a fine of up to $200 if a speeding violation is caught.

2. Disobeying Red Light Traffic Signal: Again one of the most common moving violations, this kind of infraction results in 3 points and a fine of over $100. It occurs when a driver runs a red light. The points for this kind of an offence stays on the license for three years in some states which can have devastating effects on the reputation of a driver.

3. Improper Parking: This violation comes under the non-moving violations and may result in a fine of up to $150 but no points against the license. Improper parking can be of many types, such as parking in a no-parking zone, parking directly in front of a driveway or a gate, or parking for an extended period of time which is not allowed in certain areas.

4. Overtaking School Bus: This is one of the most serious traffic violations and often overlooked by beginner and foreign drivers. If you pass a stopped school bus which is boarding or unloading children and has red lights on, can result in a fine of $280 and 3 points against your license.

5. Safety Belt Violation: All adult drivers and passengers are required to wear seat belt when on the road. A seat belt violation results in a fine of up to $65 and may negatively effect your reputation. A repeated violation of the same type may result in 3 to 4 times the charge of first-time violation.
